The announcement that someone is going offline can require an impressive amount of online preparation. There is the explanation, the routine, the reading list, and the photograph establishing that the new life contains fewer distractions and better lighting.
Exit Fuel’s 2023 essay on monk mode makes a sincere case for discipline and intentional living. We are revisiting an older idea, not claiming a newly measured 2026 trend. The appeal is understandable: reducing distraction can create room for work and choices that matter.1
The monastery has acquired a content calendar.
The audience stays
Nor is sharing the decision necessarily performative. Public commitment can help some people. A practical account of what changed can be useful to others.
The problem begins when the representation becomes more elaborate than the practice. The routine must be photographed. The absence must be announced repeatedly. The quiet life becomes a sequence of updates explaining how quiet it is.
At that point, the audience has not been removed from the process. It has been promoted to supervisor.
A hypothetical day of excellent restraint
Imagine a founder who wants to spend a month working more deliberately. They reduce meetings, protect a block of concentration, and stop checking social media while working. Fine.
Now imagine that documenting the experiment becomes a second project. The founder tracks the aesthetic of the desk, writes a daily lesson, and monitors which lessons perform best. The original distraction has returned wearing the uniform of self-improvement.
This invented founder is not the author of the source essay. The situation follows an incentive familiar to anyone selling an account of their own improvement: even the withdrawal needs to perform.
The routine is not the person
A useful practice can become a brittle identity. Missing a day stops being a small adjustment and begins to feel like evidence that the entire project has failed.
This is one cost of presenting discipline as a total transformation rather than a set of choices. Real lives contain interruptions, responsibilities, and changing needs. A routine should help a person navigate them, not become another institution to disappoint.
A life does not need to justify every activity by its contribution to a future funding round.
The commercial form of withdrawal
Modern attention markets are capable of selling almost any response to attention markets. Too much noise? Here is content about silence. Too much consumption? Here is a carefully selected collection of things to buy for a simpler life.
Withdrawal has become available as another purchasing category. The market would be delighted to help you buy less, once you have bought the appropriate equipment.
The buyer may still get something valuable. A book, a tool, or a community can help. The important question is whether it supports the intended change or supplies a more attractive way to postpone it.
Let the result be unphotogenic
The best evidence of useful discipline may be difficult to package. A task finished. A promise kept. A decision made with less distraction. A day that did not require an account of itself.
Enter monk mode if it helps. You do not have to send the monastery a weekly engagement report.
